Job quality, firm size and informality

چکیده
What is meant by ‘satisfaction’ The WERS questions contained some measures that asked about satisfaction, for example with pay. But other measures asked for ratings of the quality of managers while yet others asked about the level of job autonomy. Other work by Edwards and Sen Gupta, with Chin-Ju Tsai, on the nature of jobs in small firms has deployed the term ‘self-reported job quality’ (SRJQ). The value of this label is that it is broader than ‘satisfaction’ while recognising that the measures of quality are those as reported by workers themselves.

Perceptions on Governance Effectiveness and Informality: A Self-fulfilling Equilibrium
Motivated by empirical evidence suggesting a close link between weak institutional quality and informality, this paper proposes a game-theoretical model that explores how perceived governance effectiveness in public service provision determines a firm’s decision to be formal or informal under incomplete information with regard to other firms’ perceptions. By deploying a “global games” approach,...
متن کاملFirm Dynamics and Institutional Participation: a Case Study on Informality of Micro-enterprises in Peru
Using panel data on micro-enterprises from Peru, we find evidence suggesting that firm dynamics explain ‘formality’, i.e. the decision to participate in societal institutions. In particular, we find that participation increases with firm size and age, implying transition of firms to formality as they grow. The distinct characteristics of sub-groups, segmented according to life-cycle criteria, f...

Gross Worker Flows in the Presence of Informal Labor Markets: Evidence from Mexico, 1987-2002 This paper applies recent advances in the study of labor market dynamics to a representative developing country with a large unregulated of “informal” sector. It confirms the relevance of the recent mainstream models and debates surrounding gross worker flows to the developing country context, and offe...
متن کاملGross Worker Flows in the Presence of Informal Labor Markets . The Mexican Experience 1987 - 2002
This paper applies recent advances in the study of labor market dynamics to a representative developing country with a large unregulated of “informal” sector, Mexico. It finds, first, that the formal salaried sector shows the same procyclical job finding rate and mildly countercyclical separation behavior identified in the recent US literature by Shimer (2005a) and Hall (2005). The unregulated ...

We consider the impact of job rotation in a directed search model in which rm sizes are endogenously determined and match quality is initially unknown. A large rm bene ts from the opportunity of rotating workers so as to partially overcome loss of mismatch. As a result, in the unique symmetric equilibrium, large rms have higher labor productivity and lower separation rates. In contrast to th...
